This is another project for my daughter, that again feels very 90’s inspired. She’s been really into this style of skirt. I had some stash fabric and Joann had a pattern sale- so why not make one. She also wants a longer version, but I only had enough fabric for this length. We’re going fabric shopping to pick something out for a longer one.
Pattern Used
I used Butterick 6799. It features a bias cut, A-line skirt in 3 lengths w/ elastic waistband.
Fabric Used
I used silk chiffon from the stash. This is Anna Sui from Fabricmart a million years ago. This fabric isn’t available anymore but Fabricmart always has great designer fabrics and its one of my favorite online fabric shops. I really loved the fabric but I could never decide what I wanted to make, and then I got distracted by other projects. Beautiful fabric should be used and not sitting in a bin somewhere so I put this skirt together. The lining is bemberg rayon, also from the stash. In retrospect, I think I probably should’ve used silk charmeuse, but hindsight is 20/20 right. Charmeuse is thinner and silkier so it would’ve matched the hand of the chiffon better.
Pattern Comments
This pattern is pretty straightforward so there’s not much to note. I didn’t use the instructions, so I can’t speak on them. They seemed fine, though. This isn’t really a difficult skirt. One thing to note is that the front and back are the same piece, even though they give you two separate pieces. I was having trouble telling the difference when sewing and I checked the pattern pieces to verify.
The hand on the lining was heavier so when I hemmed it, I didn’t like how it looked. I ended up leaving the lining hem raw. Bias fabric doesn’t unravel so you technically can do this with bias fabric.
Also, before I hemmed the garment, I let it hang overnight. This is a must for hemming bias fabrics because the fabric has to settle. If you don’t, you may end up with a wavy hem that’s all different lengths. It was hemmed above the knee with a machine narrow hem.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I’m happy with this project and my daughter loves it. I recommend this pattern if you like this style of skirt. My daughter does, so I’ll be making a longer version later. I may switch up the pattern and use something w/ a different waistband treatment.
